Self-management

What is self-management?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing people with disability, their families and carers with:

  • connections to their community
  • supports and services.
  • The NDIS will roll out based on where people are located. It will be fully rolled out across WA by 2020. You can find more information about the NDIS on the NDIS website.

The NDIS has some important principles, including choice and control.

The NDIS gives people more choice about the supports that may get funded by letting them decide who manages them and how they are managed.

There are different ways to manage the supports paid for in your NDIS plan. This is called self-management.

What are the benefits of self-management?

Self-management gives you the most flexibility over the supports and services you use. You can plan, design, direct and organise these services and supports to meet your needs and your preferences. Self-management can also help you build your confidence and ability to manage your own supports.

    When you self-manage, you:

  • are in charge of your supports
  • choose who you pay to support you
  • choose who to buy services from – this is not limited to registered providers
  • can get support to self-manage – information, technology or services.
  • If you need one, a representative can support you to self-manage. If you want to find out more about self-management, please contact us on (08) 9481 0101.

    Resources

WAiS has developed some resources to help people. Engaging Your Own Supports was written for people who may want to directly engage their own support workers. It explains important information that people need to understand about the law and how it affects them.

WAiS has been working with KPMG and Capital Legal to understand the Industrial, Tax and other legal obligations of people who self-manage. You can read information about these rulings and other advice we received using the button below.

You are welcome to call us to chat about self-management, especially the legal and technical parts.
