When Policies Aren’t Enough:
WHY ABUSE OCCURS AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT
In this workshop John will explore what is known about human nature and what brings about harm and violence. He will also explore what other outside factors affect the behaviour of staff and the culture they work within.
In looking at these factors he will explain some of the common myths surrounding neglect, harm and abuse, which include some aspects that may be confronting to attendees.
Because supports and services are used often by people who are not highly valued by society, he will look at how poor quality can lead to neglect and abuse. For example, we generally find the more people are treated in ways where they are not valued by the support or service, the more likely it is that personal abuse and neglect by staff will happen. If people are not valued, then abuse and neglect are hard to stop.
Attendees will come away from this workshop with some of the most powerful ways to ensure people’s lives can be safeguarded and protected.
