We are delighted to host three guests for an exciting workshop to unpack Supported Decision Making - An Alternative to Guardianship.
This is a unique opportunity for people who support decision makers and/or work at all levels of service delivery.
The three hosts are:
Prof Tim Stainton is the founder and director of the Canadian Institute for Inclusion and Citizenship at the University of British Columbia.
Tim will speak about:
• the issues and challenges in trying to move forward to a universal supported decision making approach
• his personal experience as a decision supporter for his son.
Dr Michelle Browning is passionate about assisting people and organisations to develop their skill in the practice of supported decision-making. Currently she is the supported decision making educator in the Decision Making Possibilities project, hosted by WA’s Individualised Services.
Michelle will speak about:
• how supported decision making can be an alternative to substituted decision making in Australia
• why we should be agitating for legislative reform and changes to policies and service practices.
Dr Jo Watson directs Deakin University’s Disability and Inclusion program. She is a daughter and sister of two women with disability and a Speech Pathologist.
Jo will speak about:
• what supported decision making can look like for people with complex communication access needs and intellectual disability
• how decision supporters can influence a decision maker’s service system to uphold their will and preferences.
This is a free event! Lunch, morning and afternoon tea will be provided.
